I’m on a quest to find out what music is

Bio

Hi there! I’m, Eileen Snyder — a composer, music theorist, organist, and pianist (in no particular order) from Raleigh, North Carolina. My spread of influence is about as eclectic as I am, spanning the circuit from IDM to jazz fusion to renaissance polyphony, so it’s no wonder I lean into genre-bending in my compositions. Much of my creative process explores putting things where they don’t belong and blurring the lines society’s desperately drawn up to separate “good” music from “bad” music, art music (the elusive contemporary classical) from all else. And to that end, I’m serious about music that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and demand you take seriously my non-serious music. Well, and the serious music too. Isn’t art fun?

I hold masters degrees in composition and music theory from Michigan State University, where I studied composition with Dr. Alexis Bacon, Dr. David Biedenbender, and Dr. Zhou as well as organ with Prof. Hae Won Jang. I received a bachelor’s in piano performance from East Carolina University, where I studied composition with Dr. Ed Jacobs and piano with Dr. Keiko Sekino and Prof. Kwan Yi. My theoretical interests include ludomusicology, topic theory in video game music, and cognitive aspects of rhythm + meter in electronic music genres.

I’m currently based in East Lansing, Michigan (soon to be back in Raleigh!) Above all else, I love collaboration, which has found me working closely with Michgan State University’s game design program, as well as partnering with some real cool performers to make some real cool music. I am also on faculty at Bradley University, teaching music for interactive media.

Outside of music, I’ve got a lot of varied hobbies, including reading sci-fi novels and flexing my interior design muscle in Animal Crossing. I also have a passion for Southern cuisine and a suspiciously high batting average, provided you throw the balls slow enough.
